Healthcare is by nature an emotive profession, and it's unsurprising that disputes can arise between doctors, patients and others involved in patients' care. Oscar Mathew explains the process of mediation and offers some insight into how to resolve conflicts for the benefit of everyone involved.

However we define it, we do know that conflict in healthcare is an everyday lived experience for clinical staff.

Oscar Mathew

Oscar Mathew is a qualified barrister and mediator with a background in regulatory and public law, and a particular interest in medical law and ethics. Before his work with the Medical Mediation Foundation, Oscar was a senior legal adviser to the GMC, overseeing judicial reviews and statutory appellate work in the High Court. He had conduct of the Supreme Court case of Montgomery vs Lanarkshire Health Board [2015] UKSC 11, one of the most significant medical law cases in the last 25 years. Oscar now specialises in conflict resolution and clinical team development in the healthcare sector.
