Final year student Zainab Hussain explains how using her second language helped her communicate better with patients during placements.

I wanted to build a rapport with the patient and explain medical ideas jargon-free to help him feel at ease.

Zainab Hussain

Zainab is a final year medical student at the University of Southampton, having also done research at the University of Birmingham. She has a keen interest in public health, research and linguistic diversity within medicine. In 2020, this led her to establish The Multilingual Medic, where she hosts podcasts addressing stigmas and challenges within the healthcare setting. She is also an ambassador for girl education, which she has advocated for internationally, on 92 News and Dunya News. Her recent achievements include first prize in the Royal College of Psychiatry Research competition as well as presenting research both nationally and internationally in hypertension and neuropsychiatry. Zainab has done medical outreach projects in Nepal and Kenya, for which she was invited for a tea-time reception at the Mansion House in recognition by the Lord Mayor of London. For her continued voluntary work, she's also had the privilege to meet the Earl of Wessex at St James's Palace. She currently working with Public Health Birmingham on winter campaigns. In her spare time she enjoys keeping fit, developing her language skills and travelling.
